                Help Teachers Understand Coaching

_ Many teachers are unsure of what to expect when educational coaches begin working in their schools. Too often, teachers draw conclusions about coaches' roles and duties based upon rumor or what occurred at another school rather than what coaching will be about in their school. Effective learning leaders engage teachers in multiple conversations about coaching--its purpose, coaches' roles, desired outcomes, and teachers' perspectives on coaching. Recommended points to make include the following.
                The purpose of coaching is:
                • To provide partners for teachers
                • As they continue to build capacity
                • For ensuring the success of all students.
                A coach provides:
                • Job-embedded professional development
                • For all teachers
                • To support informed decision-making.
                A coach does this by:
                • Conferencing with teachers one-to-one
                • Working with teams of teachers
                • Providing demonstrations lessons when helpful
Educational coaches partner with their teacher colleagues to solve problems, pursue interests, and address needs.
